Seconds by Ben Tatar and the Tatar Tots

Seconds by Ben Tatar and the Tatar Tots

The Tatar Tots have one rule: they only sing about food. And Seconds, their second album of scrumptious songs, proves that rule is not even close to a limitation. Thirty-three Chicago musicians — including the LowDown Brass Band and funk trio Spare Parts — bring Ben Tatar’s vision to life across a rollicking, foot-stomping musical feast that covers everything from baking to broccoli to peanut butter. The swinging big band-flavored baking number hits different. The ’70s Latin-style peanut butter “Rat Pack” concoction is exactly as fun as it sounds. The pizza song tributing both Bob Marley and Michael Jackson somehow works. “I Got The Greens” is a blues jam that opens up for real solos. “Oh Cookie” is a freeze dance built for maximum kitchen chaos. Ben Tatar holds a master’s degree in jazz studies from DePaul and has shared stages with Maria Schneider, Arturo Sandoval, and the Kansas City Symphony Orchestra — and all of that serious musicianship is poured generously into songs about nectarines and rhumba buffets. Chicago Tribune loved it. For ages 4–8, and for anyone who has ever had strong feelings about snacks.
